Sanur, Bali, Indonesia, 2014. This was a fun and experimental project created for a kindergarten in Sanur, Bali. The clients had requested a Hobbit house style play house so I created one for them using a similar construction technique that I use for creating kilns... an ancient Middle Eastern bricklaying technique used for creating domes and vaults without the need for formwork. We included doorways and windows and even a dome skylight in the Hobbit house. The final structure was waterproofed and laid with a mesh and earth and planted up with grass and gardens. The children can play inside the house and also climb grass steps up onto the roof and slide down the other side! Click on the small images below to enlarge.
